São Paulo – Brazilian company Mazzaferro aims to increase its exports from the current 30% to 50% of net revenue in three years and the expansion to Arab countries should contribute to the goal. The company manufactures products that are based on medium, high and very high-performance polymers, and are aimed at different areas, such as medical, cosmetics, household utilities and fishing.

According to the company’s CEO, Claudio Mazzaferro (pictured), this year the company started selling fishing yarns, mainly lines for deep sea fishing (long), in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, and monofilaments for the medical area in the Emirates. It is also negotiating the export to the UAE and Saudi Arabia of products for the cosmetics sector, which are product demonstration cards. Items from the latter two segments are already in Morocco, Egypt and Jordan.

Mazzaferro has an arm that is part of the company’s origins, that of fishing products, mainly lines, and another that encompasses household utility products, technical monofilaments, monofilaments for the medical industry and cartridges for the cosmetics sector. The company also has an integrated marketing agency specializing in the beauty sector, 3Chology.

Among the household utility products produced by Mazzaferro are brooms and brushes. Technical monofilaments range from bristles for oral hygiene to invisible threads for sewing. In the medical industry, for example, monofilaments for surgical mesh and sutures are produced. For the cosmetics sector, displays and wick cards are produced for demonstrating hair coloring.

Claudio Mazzaferro says that the company has a tradition of exporting, but has been shaping up to be more internationalized, in line with a guideline from the board of directors, initially that the international market should represent 30% of net revenue, which is where the company has currently managed to place itself, and then 50%, a target to be reached in three years.

In the fishing area, the strongest exports are lines for sport fishing. The markets range from Argentina to Mexico, but the company has also been working and has already managed to enter regions such as the United States and Europe, according to Mazzaferro. The arm that takes care of the other areas has a large spraying of markets abroad. The medical products area, for example, is present in about 40 countries, according to the CEO.

Mazzaferro has been working on the strategy of migrating from commodity production to specialties. Instead of selling tones of yarn, it is getting closer to the consumer, offering products with greater added value and innovation, and with a brand. “Migrate from commodity to specialty, from economy of scale to economy of scope, and from national to global,” the CEO said of the strategy.

The company was established 65 years ago by Italian immigrant Nello Mazzaferro, and is currently in the hands of the second generation of the family. Nello started the business by importing nylon yarn and invited his brother, Mario Mazzaferro, to join the company. Later they started manufacturing the material themselves. The expansion to other sectors began with the housewares area, with the Linea Bella brand, and continued with the diversification of products and segments, until reaching the current level. Mazzaferro is the largest producer of technical yarns in Latin America.
